Precious Mementos in The "Ike" Eisenhower Bucks led tv insigniaThe former American President Dwight D. Eisenhower led America in many ways, from the Army as a five-star general, to becoming the Supreme Commander during the French and German invasions in World War II, then as the first Supreme Commander of NATO before successful in a landslide Presidential election in 1952. Both his terms were quite peaceful, the only sour note being a recession during 1958 to 1959. His landmark achievements led to him being ranked one of the top ten of the great American presidents. His death in 1969 was widely mourned, and Eisenhower bucks were minted in 1971 to commemorate both his death and the Apollo 11 moon landing.
The obverse or the face of the coin shows the profile of the 34th President of the United States with a mintmark under the President's neck, with a "D" showing it was minted in Denver or an "S" for San Francisco. Coins without a mintmark mean that they were minted in Philadelphia. The 1971 coins should have an "FG" at the neck for Frank Gasparro, the designer of the coins. The reverse, or the tail, changed depending on the occasion at the time. Originally, the tail showed an eagle on the moon's surface clutching an olive branch with the earth in the background, the insignia of the Apollo 11 Mission. The bicentennial design still stored the moon's image on it, although it was superimposed by the Liberty Bell.
From 1971 to 1979, these coins were not widely circulated even if they were known as the first of the coins that were not minted using precious metals. They, and the Bicentennial coins, were made into keepsakes. There were, though, silver-clad issues that were minted especially for collectors. But, the coins were blended with copper and the outside merely plated with an 40 % silver composition. These were "proof" or uncirculated coins also known as Blue Ikes (uncirculated) and Brown Ikes (proof). Unfortunately, the values of these coins have not gone up more than its face worth, and some not even so. These are still relatively new, even if they have not been in circulation for several decades. Apart from being a precious memento, there is no intrinsic worth in the coin.
The Eisenhower Bucks were issued to honor the former President and 5 Star General Dwight D. Eisenhower. The first coin released was the 1971 Eisenhower Dollar, which maintain an important place for collectors.
