If you have a passion for racing games and you own the Microsoft's popular gaming console, you might have come to the conclusion that your experience is going to get much richer through the use of a Xbox 360 steering wheel. In fact, if you already own one you have probably realized that fact. On the other hand some of you may be still be at the stage of wondering why should you bother in spending so much money on something like that, especially if you feel that your gamepad or joystick is all you need. If a steering wheel, with or without pedals, is only going to make things more complicated and loose you time and effort until you get used to it, why really care?
Let me tell you that I have been there and I realize very well how it feels and the doubts that come with that. For years, not just on Xbox 360 but also on PC I have been using a joystick. I was perfectly satisfied - a controller like that takes almost zero effort to setup and handle, it takes little space, it does not weight much at all, it is cheap to repair or replace and it is easy to master as well. Yet, I was seeing most of my friends and all those other people who have either always used a Xbox 360 steering wheel or have recently bought one just to claim it is a great experience. At the same time I see them struggling to keep up with me on the road or making a lot of mistakes, but they still keep saying they are having fun. How come? I have tried driving with their steering wheels just to find out, pardon me, that I totally suck. No way this is fun and no way this is a good experience, I would be thinking.
If I had no received a steering wheel as a present I would have probably still been using my good old joysticks and gamepads. But OK, I thought, let's give it a try for a week and just stick with it even if it is unpleasant in the beginning. And what a week of negative experience that was - I almost ended up hating racing games back then. There almost was not a corner where I would not spin or go off. Especially when it came down to braking with my feet there was total lack of control on my part. One may think real driving experience helps - complete nonsense, even in more realistic racing games. At least for me. All the time I would have to consciously think of how to move my arms or feet as to control the vehicle on the screen to go in the direction I would like it to go and as people who are experienced would tell you - thinking of what you have to do consciously is the worst thing in racing and that's completely valid in racing games of any kind, even the most arcade ones. That is where using a joystick or gamepad makes it so much easier even if you are just starting.
But anyway, let's just say I went over that period determined to see what's beyond and to cut a long story short - it eventually started coming together! I must say that it was one of the greatest feelings of accomplishment I have ever experienced. It was like learning to write as a kid or learning to ride a bicycle, but the difference is you are much less prone to learning new things when you come of an age so the level of satisfaction seems to be higher.
So, enough talk about how bad switching to a Xbox 360 steering wheel can be - time for me to try and convince you why it is actually totally worth doing! There is not much to be said, but there are really a few crucial things here, some objective, some rather subjective:
1. Physical comfort and stress distribution. One of the most important thing in gaming in general - your seating position and effort exercised through your limbs. When it comes to this nothing comes closer to the huge advantage gained from the use of steering wheels and pedals over a gamepad or a joystick. Nothing! The rules from real car driving really apply themselves here. Your seat or chair should be such as to allow you to reach both your pedals and steering wheel without further extending your limbs, but also not tucked in too much. When this is combined with a your rigidly positioned Xbox 360 steering wheel the effort you commit yourself to during racing is going to be perfectly distributed over your muscles of the whole body. Compare that to your usual position holding tightly your joystick or gamepad, channeling all your energy to your hands. Especially for people spending hours a day in playing racing games it becomes increasingly damaging over time. I have painful memories of not being able to even move my hands and I think I'm still paying the price for doing it for so long. On the other hand, despite getting a bit of pain now and then but only after long periods of playing, using my steering wheel and pedals have not only prevented such painful experiences, but have even worked as a rather good exercise. Yes, I'll risk saying it can even be a good training for certain muscle groups over time. Depends how hardcore of a player you are!
2. Driveability. Think about this - what gives you a bigger potential in terms of level of control? A gamepad or a joystick with which you have to do all of the steering, acceleration, braking, gear changes, HUD display switches and so on by the use of your two hands, or sometimes even single-handedly, over a small amount of space provided. Or a steering wheel, with paddles or gear shift stick, a pedal set, with or without clutch pedal, through which you can separate each action via each of your limbs and thus, eventually as you get better with practice, perform multiple actions at the same time? I think the answer is obvious. Of course, there are exceptions and depending on the game there might be no difference or it might even favour the use of gamepads and joysticks. But ultimately, when we reach the point of mastering our controller, you realize that the potential of using a Xbox 360 steering wheel is such that you might never reach it and there is always more room to improve, while at the same time you have just about totally in one with your gamepad and joystick.
3. Challenge, immersion, satisfaction. The subjective factor here is by all means not the least important and depending on your personality - it might be the primary one for you. When you think about it, most people play racing games either of love for speed, cars, motorsports or simply having a challenge. The importance here is to realize how connected all those 3 factors are and how one leads to the oth
